Charles Matthews studied at the Royal College of Music, London, and as an organ scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge. Charles pursues a varied career as pianist, organist, harpsichordist, composer and teacher, performing and broadcasting for radio and television in the UK and internationally. He has won numerous awards, most notably the first prize in the 1999 Franz Liszt Memorial Competition in Budapest. His recordings have been issued by Olympia, Guild, Touch and Priory. Charles is organist of St. Catharine’s Church, Chipping Campden; he also works extensively with children, is an organ tutor at Birmingham Conservatoire and works as contemporary music coach on the annual Curso Internacional Matisse at San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain. Charles has recently performed at the Royal Albert Hall, London; Forbidden City Concert Hall, Beijing with Emma Kirkby and at Steinway Hall, London with Caroline Jones.

Concerts are given on recorders (sopranino, descant, treble, tenor, bass and great bass) with piano, harpsichord/spinet or organ accompaniment. The musicians’ own spinet may be used if required.
Recent concerts include Greenwich International Early Music Festival and Exhibition, Steinway Hall, London, Friends Meeting House, Warwick and various Welsh venues as part of the Night Out Scheme.
